WHAT’S INVOLVED

What a kitchen renovation can include

Layout and flow

Rethinking where the sink, range, fridge and prep space sit so the room works the way you use it.

Cabinetry and storage

New or refaced cabinets, pantry storage, drawers and organizers planned around what you keep.

Counters and backsplash

Work surfaces and wall finishes chosen for daily wear, cleaning and the look you want.

Plumbing and appliances

Relocating or upgrading sinks, dishwashers and appliance connections where the layout calls for it.

Lighting and electrical

Task, under-cabinet and ambient lighting, plus outlets where you actually need them.

Flooring and finishing

Floors, paint, trim and the final details that tie the room together.

BEFORE YOU START

Plan it
properly.

A few decisions made early tend to save time, money and rework later.

  1. 01

    Decide what stays where.

Keeping the sink, range and gas or water lines in place usually simplifies a project. Moving them adds trades, coordination and cost.

  2. 02

    Settle selections early.

Cabinets, some countertops and appliances can take weeks to arrive. Choosing them before demolition helps keep the schedule realistic.

  3. 03

Plan for life without a kitchen.

Think about where you’ll prepare meals and wash dishes while the work is underway.

  4. 04

    Check whether a permit applies.

Replacing finishes usually doesn’t need one, but removing walls or significant plumbing changes may. Electrical work in Ontario also falls under Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) rules.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Good to know.

How long does a kitchen renovation take?

It depends on scope. A refresh of counters, backsplash and fixtures is much shorter than a new layout with new cabinetry, plumbing and electrical. Lead times for cabinets and counters often set the overall schedule, so we’ll talk through timing once we understand your project.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen renovation?

Cosmetic updates generally don’t. Structural changes, new plumbing drains and some other work can. Requirements vary between municipalities across the GTA, so it’s worth confirming with your local building department early.

What should I have ready before asking for an estimate?

A few photos of the space, rough dimensions if you have them, a list of must-haves, and any inspiration images. A budget range helps too, even if it’s approximate.
